Mother/Daughter/Public/Private is a series of digital images made from long Skype conversations with my mother. Part surveillance, part diary these images are an intimate look at myself and my relationship to my mother, offering a vulnerable and slightly unsettling look at two women related by blood, ideals, and experiences.
In this work, the webcam acts as both a mirror and a lens during our conversations as we simultaneously document each other. These are images of two women’s conversations mediated through a computer, reflected back on each other while talking and photographing simultaneously. Creating a video still from real time through a more intimate and accurate-but-pixilated form than still photography, a portrait of gesture and intimacy is revealed.
